Kathy Lee Dawn Melendez, who is known as Dawn, attended the University of Tennessee. She received her Bachelor of Science in Deaf Education and Masters in Special Education/Administration & Supervision. She taught at the Tennessee School for the Deaf in Knoxville, Tennessee and Supervised at the Louisiana School for the Deaf in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Dawn is a RID CI/CT Certified Interpreter for the Deaf and has interpreted in many various situations.  She owned her own Interpreting Agency in Baton Rouge, Louisiana for many years.

Dawn was born in Iowa. Her father was a career Marine. She has lived all over the USA. She met her Louisiana Bayou Boy husband in New Orleans. After living in Baton Rouge for many years, they moved to Shawnee, Oklahoma in January 2022 to be near their son, Dr. Mario Melendez and his family.
